Woodworker’s eye for detail pays off

Mark Mccalla strongly believes that paying attention to the little things is what makes a project excel. “It’s always the small things that finish off a job to really make it shine,” said Mccalla, who owns Craftsman Quality Floor Covering, a hardwood, ceramic and tile flooring installation and design company in Saugus.
After 15 years in the business, Mccalla’s attention to detail paid off when one of the projects his company designed and installed in Newhall was honored with the Best Member’s Residence Design award by the National Wood Flooring Association.
“It is an excellent benefit to our company to receive this award,” Mccalla said.
The award was presented in April during the association’s annual convention and 2002 Floor of the Year Contest in Orlando, Fla.
“I wasn’t at the show,” Mccalla said. “I actually had a friend at the show and he called and said, ‘You won one of the categories.’ I was astounded. The quality of the other entries (was) outstanding.”

Association spokeswoman Anita Howard said the residence design category, consisting of entries from residential work completed between March 2001 and February, featured all types of wood flooring including faculty and job site finished with hand, laser or mechanically cut design elements, and mixed media done by association members.
Howard said the independent competition was judged by the American Society of Interior Designers, which rated the projects on how their use of flooring complimented and flowed with the rest of the room.
“Their main focus was looking at how the design incorporated in the floor and reflected all the other elements of the room,” Howard said.
The association, a nonprofit organization based in St. Louis with more than 2,800 members, educates consumers, architects, designers, specifiers and builders in the uses of wood flooring.
“This award really raises the bar on how floors are designed, sanded and finished in the future,” Mccalla said.
Craftsman Quality, which has specialized in sanded and finished flooring for the last 10 years, also offers ceramic, carpet and tile flooring and all types of carpentry work.
Mccalla, who got started in the flooring industry with his father nearly two decades ago, said sanded finishes are a craft. “Sanding takes a long time to bring about the beauty in the wood,” he said. “Our company excels at doing the small things. Being a small business allows us to pay more attention to what the customers want.”

Craftsman Flooring is a family owned and operated business that shares the same interest as the homeowner.
